뽕나무과는 장미목의 과이다. 40속, 1000여 종 이상의 식물을 거느리고 있다. 대다수가 열대, 아열대 지역에 서식하나 드물게 온대에 서식하기도 한다. 예전에는 쐐기풀목으로 분류했었으나, 최근의 발생학 연구에 따라 장미목으로 분류한다. 뽕모시풀속을 제외하고는 모두 나무이다.

풀인 뽕모시풀속을 제외한 나무 네 가지 속을 구분하는 방법은 다음과 같다.

  • 꽃이 열매 안에 있으면 무화과속이다.
  • 꽃이 열매 바깥에 있으면서
    • 잎에 톱니가 없고 가지에 가시가 있으면 구지뽕나무속이다.
    • 잎에 톱니가 있고 가시가 없으면서
      • 열매가 둥글면 닥나무속이다.
      • 열매가 긴 편이면 뽕나무속이다.[1]
